Working to stem Hamilton County's youth suicide outbreak
As investigators review the Jan. 26 suicide death of 8-year-old Gabriel Taye of Westwood, school officials, mental health experts and political figures across Hamilton County aren't waiting for a final report.
They're spending the summer assessing how best to combat the county's current outbreak of youth suicides before school resumes in August, with emphasis on training adults in suicide prevention.
The recent increase in suicide deaths has concerned caregivers that children who most need help are staying silent about their pain. On June 12, mental health practitioners met near Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to review the needs of the region’s young people and talk about what other resources could be devoted to suicide prevention.
