Meet Xander: 2021 Family Advocacy Week Champion

Xander is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from June 13-18, 2021. Through this event, Xander and his family will discuss his health journey, Seattle Children’s role in providing Xander with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of patients like Xander.

At 9 years old, Xander was diagnosed with OCD, depression and anxiety.

“I knew my child would need special care the first time they told us he had thoughts of killing himself,” says Stephanie, Xander’s mom. “There were very few resources to help us support him.”

His family and teachers changed how they cared for Xander. He was no longer able to make it through the day and needed constant support. He was also not allowed to be left alone and safety plans were implemented.

Xander has weekly appointments with his psychologist, monthly group therapy with Seattle Children's OCD clinic and regular monitoring by his psychiatrist.

Now 11 years old, Xander's OCD still requires significant effort and energy to keep it manageable. Treatment was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic since telehealth treatment cannot be provided across state lines.
