Meet Robert: 2020 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Robert is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from August 10-14, 2020. Through this special event, Robert and his family will share information about his health journey, Advocate Children’s Hospital’s role in providing Robert with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Robert.
Following delivery, a seizure prompted the NICU team to send Robert for a CT scan. He was born with a skull fracture, which produced a subdural hematoma, or bleeding in the brain. He also suffered a neonatal stroke.
He underwent emergency surgery less than a day after he was born and had two subsequent surgeries.
“We were devastated and filled with anxiety for our baby boy,” says Erin, Robert’s mother.
The specialists at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois, treated Robert’s condition. He has had multiple surgeries for his skull fracture, including a skull implant and wore a cranial helmet to assist with healing.
His family was patient and took it one day at a time. Slowly, over time, Robert’s health improved.
Robert is now 3 years old and doing great. He’s regained his hearing loss and no longer requires therapy. He is a happy, determined, smart, funny, active young man who enjoys riding his bike, jumping and climbing and watching Paw Patrol.
“We just have to watch and monitor Bobby and we will see what happens, but again we are hopeful as he is doing great now,” says Erin.
