Meet Fredrik: 2020 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Fredrik is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from August 10-14, 2020. Through this special event, Fredrik and his family will share information about his health journey, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center’s role in providing Fredrik with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Fredrik.
Fredrik weighed a healthy nine pounds at birth, however, soon after his weight dropped, and he was not gaining weight like he was supposed to.
“Our pediatrician was not giving us any real guidance or solution, but as a new mom, I was concerned,” says Marie, Fredrik’s mother.
When he was 3 months old, Marie took Fredrik to the emergency room at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut. The doctors discovered that Fredrik was aspirating, meaning he was breathing stomach contents into his airway.
After chest X-rays, blood tests, and modified barium swallow studies, Fredrik was diagnosed with reactive airway disease, failure to thrive, and acid reflux. He was also later diagnosed with asthma at 13 months old.
“At first he required two surgeries and many hospitalizations,” says Marie “We did not know the extent of Fredrik’s health problems, so this caused a lot of worry and anxiety.”
Today, Fredrik is doing great. He still sees an ENT and pulmonologist every few months, but his doctors have made great strides in getting his asthma and aspirating under control.
“I don’t believe his asthma would be as controlled as it is now if not for the specialists at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center,” says Marie. “We are truly grateful for Fredrik’s care.”
