Meet Addie: 2020 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Addie is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from August 10-14, 2020. Through this special event, Addie and her family will share information about her health journey, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital’s role in providing Addie with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Addie.
Addie’s pediatrician discovered a heart murmur during her two-week checkup. She was diagnosed with a ventricular septal defect—a small hole in the wall separating the two lower chambers of her heart.
“My husband and I were worried, but comfortable as long as the doctor remained confident,” said Betsey, Addie’s mother.
Addie was referred to the specialists at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Regional hospitals do not have the capacity to assist pediatric heart patients, proving that Le Bonheur is vital for specialized pediatric care.
Sometimes the small holes will close on their own without surgery, yet after seven years, Addie’s had not. Surgery was recommended so Addie and her parents met with a surgeon at Le Bonheur. Everything went according to plan and the defect was repaired.
Today Addie is doing great. She will be a heart patient for the rest of her life and continue to be monitored for mild regurgitation during annual checkups. Addie is a loving, witty, free spirit who enjoys swimming, basketball, softball, and dancing.
