It’s That Time of the Year Again - Back to School

As the summer winds down for most of us it’s also time for parents and school-aged children to get ready for the big yellow buses to roll through the neighborhood and classes to begin. Besides the notebooks, backpacks and calculators, back to school prep includes necessary trips to your child’s pediatrician, dentist and eye doctor.

Mandatory immunizations for day care and grade school are different for every state and, sometimes, change every year. The National Network for Immunization Information offers a list of vaccinations required for each state, as well as contact information for the state health department.

August also marks Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. Ophthalmologist Brian S. Boxer Wachler, MD, has some tips on making sure your child has healthy vison as the school year starts. And last, but not least, don’t forget -- a healthy mouth goes a long way. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the start of a new school year is the best time to schedule an exam and to make sure your child’s daily routine includes oral health.
