Family Advocacy Day Hero -- Meet Zoni R.

Zoni R., Age 4
Hometown: Marysville, OH
Hospital: Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, OH

When Zoni was 3 years old, what was supposed to be a fun camping vacation to Michigan soon turned into an unforgettable tragedy. Zoni and her family were around the campfire when, while playing with her brother, she turned too quickly, lost her balance and fell into the fire. She suffered severe burns on her legs, bottom and one of her arms. She was stabilized at a hospital in Michigan and then transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where she was an inpatient for 33 days, 6 days of which she spent in an induced coma.

Music therapists and child life specialist helped keep her spirits up as she recovered from skin graft surgery, and as her first and second degree burns started to heal. She now wears compression garments and will need to wear them for about a year. You’d never know Zoni’s attitude that she had this experience. She’s an energetic, talkative and spirited child. Zoni recently dressed up as a doctor for her appointment at the Burn Center at Nationwide Children’s just to keep everyone laughing and entertained.

Fact: The one percent of hospitals that receive CHGME funding trains approximately 50 percent of all pediatricians and pediatric specialists.
