2015 Family Advocacy Day Hero -- Samantha
Samantha (Sam) is an active, silly, fun loving 4-year-old who had a very difficult start in life. Prior to birth, she and her twin sister, Sophia, developed twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) which required in-utero surgery for their survival. They were then born premature at 33 weeks gestation. After birth, Sam continued to be faced with life-threatening medical complications for which she had to undergo stomach surgery at 4 days old. She also had two open heart surgeries before turning 6 months old. She continued to require frequent follow-up by several specialists for the first 3 years of her life.
Through perseverance, Sam overcame her developmental delays and is now achieving appropriate developmental milestones. She will continue to face an uncertain future due to her heart defect; however, her courage and fortitude will continue to prevail.
You would never know all that Sam has overcome by just looking at her. She is a strong-willed child who loves to act silly, build with Legos, play with trains, read books, color, paint, swim, run, ride her scooter, and play with her cat and dog. Most of all she enjoys spending time with her sister and big brother.
