What's Up Wednesday -- Khalil
#WhatsUpWednesday is our chance to hear from the teens and young adults who are involved with the Speak Now for Kids community. This week’s post will focus on 22-year-old Khalil. You may remember Khalil from his participation in this year’s Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day.
So Khalil......what’s up?
Why do I advocate? I advocate for Children’s Specialized Hospital because they have the best therapist in the world. I also advocate for Brain Injury Awareness so I can educate the importance of being a survivor.
Person I find most inspirational I find my mom the most inspirational person. She is my rock, my world. She has changed her life drastically for me. She made a lot of hard decisions when I was injured. I love her so much. She is my biggest supporter.
What makes me unique What makes me unique is my personality and my charming ways. I’m such a people person, I never let anything or anyone get me down.
What jam gets me up when I’m down Honestly any type of music gets me up. I like rap, pop, country, etc. If there is music I’m dancing.
What have I overcome I have overcome a brain injury that no one thought I would survive. After months of therapy I was able to walk again, talk again and gain most of my living skills. I have proven to the doctors and therapists that anything is possible when you work hard.
What do I want the world to know about my condition I want the world to know that I’m not stupid, my brain is injured and it doesn't work as well as it use to. So please have a little patience with me.
If I could change the world I would…. like everyone to just get along. Since my injury I have a different look on everything in todays world. We only live one life so lets do it peacefully.
Who, or what, is my biggest supporter My biggest supporter is my mom and family. They have never left my side and always give me the best advice. They are the reason I fought so hard to get better.
What does my children’s hospital mean to me Children’s Specialized Hospital means the world to me. They are my “Dream Team”. Without them none of my accomplishments would have been possible. The therapist pushed me and never gave up on me. With all off the hospitals hard work I was able to leave and go tome feeling determined. I could never thank them enough. Children’s Specialized Hospital rocks.
How do I plan to give back to the world I plan on giving back to the world by becoming a registered nurse and volunteering my time to help others. I love helping people, I have volunteered at Children’s Specialized Hospital and a nursing home. I hope in the near future I can share my story with some high schools in my area.
What do I want to be when I grow up I want to be a registered nurse. I want to have a career in which I change lives. I love helping people and think it is the most fulfilling thing in the world.
