Meet Zachary: 2020 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Zachary is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from August 10-14, 2020.
Through this very special event, Zachary and his family will share information about his unique health journey, Michigan Medicine C.S. Mott Children's Hospital’s role in providing Zachary with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Zachary.
If you met Zachary today and saw his amazing smile, you would never know at one point he was given less than a 5% chance at life.
He’s had to overcome many obstacles and endure many surgeries to treat short-gut syndrome, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy.
Michigan Medicine C.S. Mott Children's Hospital has become Zachary’s second home. He has been admitted dozens of times. During infanthood, Zachary spent months in the NICU to mostly address nutritional imbalances and dehydration issues. He has received exceptional care from the hospital’s neurologists, pulmonologists, ophthalmologists, physical medicine and rehabilitation staff, as well as their physical, occupational, and speech therapists.
Despite these challenges, four-and-a-half-year-old Zachary is thriving! He attends school and loves to be with his teachers and friends. Zachary especially enjoys music class. He likes stroller walks and he loves to be silly with his sisters. They paint, read, and go on adventures. His contagious smile can brighten anyone’s day. Zachary’s laugh at every day sounds makes the rest of us stop and remember to enjoy the little things in life—and not to take anything for granted.
This sweet little boy is a miracle. Zachary offers so much joy to his family, and all he asks for in return is love. Zachary wants to help others understand and learn from his medical conditions. He never gives up and neither will his parents. Keep up the fight, Zachary!
