Meet Lucas: 2018 Family Advocacy Day Champion
Lucas is participating at 2018 Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day from June 26-27 in Washington, D.C. During the event, Lucas will share information about his health journey and the importance of children’s health care with members of Congress. Below is his story.
You can’t help but smile when you meet Lucas. He is a charismatic, energetic and intelligent 11-year-old always proud to advocate for others. He is excited to join Speak Now for Kids in the nation’s capital to tell lawmakers that children’s hospitals are not just important for families with kids born in need of serious care — they are important for everyone.
When Lucas was 7 years old, he accidentally knocked a pot of boiling water onto his face and shoulder, receiving second and third degree burns. He was wearing a sweatshirt at the time of the accident; because the water absorbed in the fabric had prolonged contact with the skin, his burns were even more severe under it.
Lucas’s mother, Ashlee, rushed Lucas to the local hospital, where he was referred to MUSC Children’s Hospital. Ashlee explains, “Lucas was able to receive all of the care he needed, including debridement and skin grafts, at MUSC Children's Hospital. Had it not been for MUSC Children’s, we would have had to travel outside of the state for the burn treatment Lucas needed.”
MUSC Children’s also created a welcoming and safe environment for Lucas. After his treatment, Lucas recalled, “MUSC Children's Hospital felt like home, and I felt like I had become part of the family.”
Today, Lucas is doing great! If you had the pleasure to meet him, he would be sure to tell you that he is pain free and can do anything. Lucas’s scars do not bother him, but if somebody notices them, he will use it as an opportunity to educate them about burn safety. He is very passionate about educating others, especially other kids.
Lucas has taken educational advocacy to several local schools, and even helped create a comic book and video about burn safety! Ashlee boasts, “The ‘one’ word that best describes Lucas is ‘AMAZING ADVOCATE’ (I realize that this is two words... but one word will not suffice to describe him)! He has taken his difficult and painful injury and turned it into something good for others.”
