Meet Lorenzo: 2019 Family Advocacy Day Child Champion

Lorenzo is participating at 2019 Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day from June 25-26 in Washington, D.C. During the event, Lorenzo will share information about his health journey and the importance of children’s health care with members of Congress. Below is his story.

When Heather was pregnant with her third son, Lorenzo, she had a routine prenatal anatomy scan. The test showed that something was wrong—blood was flowing in the wrong direction through Lorenzo’s little heart.

Before Lorenzo was born, he was diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis, aortic valve regurgitation, mitral valve regurgitation, and evolving hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). His condition was so severe that it was unlikely he could survive the pregnancy without an intervention.

In the 24th week of Heather’s pregnancy, Lorenzo received a unique in-utero procedure on his heart to reverse the evolving HLHS and allow its left side to grow. Because of the successful surgery at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, Lorenzo grew stronger and showed continuous improvement for the remainder of the pregnancy.

On May 18, Lorenzo was born—he was healthy enough to be discharged with his mother at 5 days old!

Today, Lorenzo is a healthy 1-year-old. He receives monthly echocardiograms with UH Rainbow Babies, but he leads a normal life with no restrictions! Lorenzo had a better outcome than his parents could have ever dreamed of. He is a true miracle and his family hopes that by sharing his story and spreading awareness, they can offer hope to other families who might rely on this rare in-utero procedure to save their child’s life.

Join us in welcoming Lorenzo to 2019 Family Advocacy Day.
