Meet Kate: 2020 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Kate is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from August 10-14, 2020. Through this very special event, Kate and her family will share information about her unique health journey, Children’s Hospital Colorado’s role in providing Kate with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Kate.
Kate is an outgoing 11-year-old girl who loves drama, singing, and Harry Styles – but not necessarily in that order. While she hopes to one day become a professional actress, Kate is stepping into the spotlight for another reason: to get more people talking about mental health.
Kate receives care at Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Pediatric Mental Health Institute for anxiety, sensory integration disorder, and ADHD. In third grade, she was repeatedly bullied by classmates. After a particularly upsetting encounter on Valentine’s Day, Kate revealed to her mom that she didn’t want to live anymore. Her family rushed her to Children’s Hospital Colorado for an emergency psychiatric evaluation. With a lot of hard work and support from her family and care providers, Kate found the strength to move forward.
Today, Kate is determined to use her personal experiences to help end the stigma associated with mental health conditions—particularly for young people like herself. She launched a video series called “Kate’s Corner” where she offers coping strategies for young people struggling with various aspects of life, including the stress of COVID-19.
In 2019, Kate spoke to a state senate committee on behalf of Children Hospital Colorado’s advocacy team in support of a youth mental health bill that ultimately passed. As a patient ambassador, Kate and her family raise funds for the hospital’s Pediatric Mental Health Institute.
Way to go, Kate!
