Meet Kairi: 2020 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Kairi is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from August 10-14, 2020. Through this special event, Kairi and her family will share information about her health journey, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ role in providing Kairi with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Kairi.
When Kairi was 8 years old, her pediatrician informed her parents that she had an enlarged spleen and recommended getting an ultrasound.
That same day, her pain worsened, and Kairi was rushed to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ emergency room, where she was admitted for two weeks.
Hormone injections helped Kairi produce red blood cells until a diagnosis was reached. She also had a blood test every morning and three different procedures while at CHLA.
By the time she was 9 years old, Kairi was diagnosed with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disease causing the growth of cysts and eventual failure of the kidneys. She was on dialysis until doctors could perform both a kidney and liver transplant.
“Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ specialized treatment for Kairi’s transplant has been amazing,” says Oscar, Kairi’s father. I don’t think we would have gotten the same experience elsewhere.”
Today, Kairi is healthy and energetic. She is stable and monitored at regular check-up appointments. She enjoys making TikTok dance videos, listening to music, writing stories, and researching the paranormal.
