Meet Joshua: 2020 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Joshua is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from August 10-14, 2020. Through this special event, Joshua and his family will share information about his health journey, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s role in providing Joshua with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Joshua.
At only 2 days old, Joshua was diagnosed with malrotation, an abnormality causing the intestine to develop incorrectly.
As of now, Joshua has had several surgeries and 95 percent of his small intestine removed. He’s also had a variety of different therapies and seen several specialists at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida.
“It took a team to get him where he is now,” says Stephanie, Joshua’s mother.
Joshua’s treatments require a port and gastronomy tube, which require weekly visits to the hospital for port access and checking to make sure his electrolytes and vitamins are at normal levels.
“I feel lucky to have the hospital in my community,” says Stephanie. “They have made me and Joshua feel comfortable and educated all along the way. The team is very welcoming and makes you feel like family. The doctors and staff were amazing.”
Today, Joshua is 12 and doing well with his therapy and treatments. He is creative, compassionate, positive and happy. He especially loves video games like Super Mario and Sonic.
