Meet JJ: 2021 Family Advocacy Week Champion
JJ is participating in Speak Now for Kids’ Family Advocacy Week from June 13-18, 2021. Through this event, JJ and his family will discuss his health journey, El Paso Children’s Hospital’s role in providing JJ with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like JJ.
When JJ was two years old, he was diagnosed with Pre B ALL Leukemia, an aggressive cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood. The family was devastated but placed their son’s care in the specialists at El Paso Children’s Hospital.
JJ endured chemotherapy treatments and procedures for three and a half years. His cancer treatment is now complete, but he still visits the hospital for lab work, IVIG infusions, attending survivor’s clinic and getting necessary scans, EKG’s and cardiograms to ensure he remains healthy.
“You see a real difference right when you walk in the door,” says Annete, JJ’s mother. “The staff at El Paso Children’s Hospital are experts. They are familiar with the community and take great care of children's needs.”
Today, JJ is nine years old and doing well. He’s a curious kid who always has a smile on his face and likes to explore. He likes making stop motion videos, math, playing videos games, going on trips and spending time with his family.
“Even though life has definitely changed this past year due to COVID-19, JJ has dealt with the new changes well.” says Annete. “He has done well with remote learning, and he understands the concept of doing his part to keep others and himself safe and healthy.”
