Meet Jaden: 2018 Family Advocacy Day Champion
Jaden is participating at 2018 Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day from June 26-27 in Washington, D.C. During the event, Jaden will share information about his health journey and the importance of children’s health care with members of Congress. Below is his story.
Eight-year-old Jaden loves all things about his home state of Colorado — from camping and fishing to the Denver Broncos. But before he could discover his love of Colorado’s landscape, Jaden spent a lot of time in the hospital. When he was born, Jaden suffered a stroke that caused damage to his brain.
He was later diagnosed with hydrocephalus, an incurable condition in which fluid builds up deep within the brain. Jaden's parents were once told that their son may never be able to walk or talk — but this tenacious warrior has worked hard to progress beyond what anyone thought possible.
Jaden, his family, and his team at Children’s Hospital Colorado have not let any of his medical struggles get in the way of him becoming a bright, courageous and kind young man. But when he isn’t spending time outdoors, those medical issues do still require a lot of care.
In addition to the effects of his stroke and hydrocephalus, Jaden suffers from vision loss and asthma, as well as food and environmental allergies. There is no denying that he faces extensive medical challenges, but with the help of his family and Children’s Hospital Colorado, he has made significant progress!
“He is always smiling through the most painful situations,” say Jaden’s parents. “He is the hardest worker…working 10 times harder at ‘simple’ tasks which are taken for granted by most. No matter what obstacle has been placed in his way, he has truly adapted and overcome those challenges. He is a hero.”
Today, this young Coloradan is healthy overall. He loves trains and wants to be an engineer when he grows up. Strong, brave and kind, Jaden helps us all see that, with hard work and perseverance, challenges can be overcome. Anything is possible with hope, love and perseverance.
