Meet Eden: 2020 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Eden is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from August 10-14, 2020. Through this special event, Eden and her family will share information about her health journey, Texas Children’s Hospital’s role in providing Eden with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Eden.
In June 2015, Eden was diagnosed with a rare, unnamed bone cancer—the only diagnosis of this kind in the country. She was admitted to Texas Children’s in Houston, Texas, to start treatment where she underwent a multitude of tests including a CT scan, bone scan, ultrasounds, MRIs, X-rays and PET scan.
Due to the rareness of Eden's tumor, she received a highly individualized chemotherapy and radiation treatment plan created by a multidisciplinary team at Texas Children’s.
When Eden relapsed in 2018, she had the opportunity to participate in a novel clinical trial for pediatric patients with relapsed disease. “It was scary to learn your daughter has cancer, and they don’t know what kind,” says Shannon, her mother.
Eden is currently in remission and receives a PET scan every six months.
Today, Eden is doing great. She’s a happy, feisty teenager with a positive outlook. She’s driven and motivated. In her spare time, Eden likes to spend time hanging out with friends and family.
