Meet Dathin & Bryelle: 2021 Family Advocacy Week Champions
Dathin and Bryelle are participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from June 13-18, 2021. Through this event, Dathin, Bryelle and their family will discuss their health journey, Children's Hospital & Medical Center’s role in providing them with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of patients like Dathin and Bryelle.
During the 20-week ultrasound, Dathin’s parents discovered he had spina bifida, scoliosis and hydrocephalus.
Dathin has had multiple surgeries including back surgery, brain surgery, a tracheotomy and more to improve his quality of life. He’s also enrolled in the children with medical complexity clinic at Children's Hospital and Medical Center.
"Children’s Omaha loves me,” says Dathin. “They help me to stay healthy."
Several years later, Dathin’s younger sister, Bryelle, was diagnosed as a newborn with ventricular septal defect (VSD), or a hole between the two chambers of her heart.
“We immediately wanted to know as much as possible about her diagnosis,” says April, Dathin’s and Bryelle’s mother. “We were shocked that another child of ours has a complex medical need.”
Bryelle receives care primarily at the Children's Specialty Clinic in Lincoln, NE but needs open heart surgery at the main campus soon.
"They care deeply for my children in a way that I can't, not just with their physical health but also for the way they genuinely love each patient,” says April.
Currently, Dathin is 13 years old, happy, healthy and likes baseball. Bryelle, now 6 months old, is doing well and awaiting surgery.
