Meet Dalian: 2021 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Dalian is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from June 13-18, 2021. Through this event, Dalian and his family will discuss his health journey, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago’s role in providing him with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of patients like Dalian.
Around nine months old, Dalian stopped breathing and from that moment on he’s required medical attention around the clock.
Dalian is a quadriplegic with other medical complexities, including scoliosis, cerebral palsy and ventilator dependent. His parents sought a second opinion from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and quickly transitioned Dalian’s care to 11 different specialists.
“Dalian's sibling was five years old at the time while Dalian was initially spending about half of his time in hospitals,” says Marina, Dalian’s mother. “This made it difficult to make everyday routines as nurturing as possible as a family unit. It's terrifying to raise a special needs child.”
Now 15 years old, Dalian is stable, but he’s struggled with the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. He loves to be around his friends and family and listen to music.
