Meet Chase: 2020 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Chase is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from August 10-14, 2020. Through this special event, Chase and his family will share information about his health journey, Wolfson Children’s Hospital’s role in providing Chase with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Chase.
Chase was sick off and on during the summer of 2015.
“He would get better, and then get a little sick again,” says Cassie, Chase’s mother. “We chalked it up to a busy summer and he was growing.”
On August 16, Chase had a small seizure, and his family took him to Southeast Georgia Medical Center in Brunswick, Georgia. The ER staff treated Chase, but they knew he needed more specific care and recommended Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Chase was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
“We were shocked and sad, but also very hopeful that the team of doctors, nurses and hospital staff would lead us through it,” says Cassie.
Over the course of his three-year treatment, 3-year-old Chase faced several bone marrow biopsies, spinal taps, intense chemotherapy and blood transfusions.
“We are grateful to the specialists at Wolfson Children’s Hospital for providing wonderful care to Chase and our family,” says Cassie. “But we need more research dollars for pediatric cancer research.”
Today, Chase is 8 years old and in remission. He visits the doctors at Nemours Children's Specialty Care in Brunswick, Georgia every two months for blood work and a check-up. Chase enjoys playing video games and swimming.
