Meet Adrian: 2021 Family Advocacy Week Champion
Adrian is participating in Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week from June 13-18, 2021. Through this event, Adrian and his family will discuss his health journey, the Children’s Health Children’s Medical Center Dallas’ role in providing Adrian with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of patients like Adrian.
One morning Adrian woke up and his body was swollen all over. At 3 years old, he was taken to urgent care but was then directed to the emergency room at Children’s Health Children’s Medical Center Dallas’ where he was immediately admitted.
After several days in the hospital and many tests, a renal biopsy confirmed Adrian had nephrotic syndrome, a kidney disorder that causes the body to excrete too much protein in the urine.
In a first attempt at treatment, Adrian was taking a variety of medications, but they failed after several adjustments. Next, he was given albumin infusions, but they were ineffective too. After several years, Adrian was reaching end stage renal disease and put on the kidney transplant list.
While the family waited for a transplant, Juan, Adrian’s brother, knew he wanted to help and proved to be a possible match for his brother. In mid-2019, Juan donated his kidney to Adrian.
“His quality of life has improved so much,” says Maria, Adrian and Juan’s mother.
Today, Adrian is 12 years old and doing great. He has to take medications to prevent rejection, but that doesn’t stop him from playing baseball – he’s at his happiest on the pitching mound.
