Montana has ranked among the top 10 happiest states for the past four years, according to a report by CBS News. It may be shocking to learn, then, that the state has also been among the top five states for suicide rates for the past 30 years — often sitting in the No. 1 spot.
While you might associate suicide more closely with rural areas where mental health care is lacking and firearms abound, urban areas like Bozeman aren’t exempt.
“The only place I see (suicide) numbers like in Bozeman is on the reservation,” said Katie Gerten, community relations coordinator at the children’s mental health center Youth Dynamics.
