Child Life Specialists are Exceptional!
March is Child Life Month and Speak Now for Kids is proud to celebrate Crawford Daniel, a certified child life specialist II who has been with Children’s Alabama, Birmingham for four and a half years.
“I always knew that I wanted a career that would allow me to help other people, specifically children,” says Crawford.
“Not only do I get to do that, but I also get to work closely with patient families — which is an added bonus. I love that every day is different, and I am constantly learning new things and challenging myself.”
The child life program at Children’s of Alabama consists of 27 certified child life specialists and one activity coordinator and sees around 40,000 child patients annually. “We work on multiple inpatient units as well as outpatient clinics, outpatient surgery and the emergency department,” Crawford explains. “We also provide internship and practicum opportunities and work closely with our Patient Pal volunteers. The child life specialists at Children’s Alabama are well-respected among the medical team and the hospital as whole.”
“Working through the COVID-19 pandemic has been tough. I have deep empathy for our child patients and their families as well as our medical team. Being hospitalized is daunting but throw a pandemic into the mix and it can feel even more overwhelming and lonely for everyone. We are all figuring this out together and providing support is more important than ever.”
“The best part of my job is watching my patients grow and overcome their fears while in the hospital. These kids are so resilient and brave, and it is truly an honor to work with them. Knowing that I play a small role in such a significant part of someone’s life is something that I never take for granted.”
