Sam is participating in Speak Now for Kids’ Family Advocacy Week from June 13-18, 2021. Through this event, Sam and his family will discuss his health journey, Children’s Minnesota’s role in providing Sam with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like Sam.
When Sam was 19 months old, he was treated at the University of Iowa Hospital for epileptic seizures. The family relocated to Minneapolis soon after – in part to be closer to the neuroscience group at Children’s Minnesota.

Washington Pediatric Hospital’s role in providing Mekhi with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of patients like Mekhi.
Mekhi was born in Baltimore at Mercy Medical Center. At birth he was diagnosed with spina bifida, a cleft pallet, frozen joints and underdeveloped lungs. Mekhi also needed cranial alignments to adjust the bones in his skull.

In April 2020, Shantel, Sha'Miya’s mother, knew something was off when her daughter started sleeping more and losing weight. They soon noticed a lump on Sha’Miya’s upper thigh and went to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to have it examined. Surgeons removed the cyst, but tests revealed that Sha'Miya had acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Through this event, JJ and his family will discuss his health journey, El Paso Children’s Hospital’s role in providing JJ with necessary health care services, and why the public and our elected officials must invest in the future of kids like JJ.
When JJ was two years old, he was diagnosed with Pre B ALL Leukemia, an aggressive cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood. The family was devastated but placed their son’s care in the specialists at El Paso Children’s Hospital.

This past summer, over 50 patient families from 37 children’s hospitals in 22 states gathered virtually via the Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Week to advocate for children’s health with federal lawmakers. For many families, the experience marked the first time they had ever spoken with their elected officials.

Chase was sick off and on during the summer of 2015.
“He would get better, and then get a little sick again,” says Cassie, Chase’s mother. “We chalked it up to a busy summer and he was growing.”
