2016 Speak Now For Kids Family Advocacy Day Hero: Gabe
One day Gabe was perfectly healthy, and the next he was lying in a hospital bed in terrible pain. Gabe was suffering from a serious infection that developed after his appendix ruptured. What Gabe’s parents thought was the stomach bug, turned into a diagnosis far more scary and complex than they could have imagined. Gabe’s ruptured appendix triggered a multitude of health complications, including digestive paralysis and formation of a large abscess.
The medical team at MUSC Children’s Hospital ensured that Gabe and his family were a part of Gabe’s care plan the entire time. The MUSC staff always took into account Gabe’s needs and age. Willingly, doctors, nurses and numerous other staff members addressed Gabe’s fears and worries before he underwent multiple invasive and painful procedures.
After spending nearly five weeks at MUSC, Gabe has almost fully recovered. He has returned to his active and curious self, but he is forever changed by this experience. For a 9-year-old, he now has an extraordinary outlook on health and life.
