Winning the Campaign to Curb Teen Pregnancy
MTV viewers first met Maci, Amber, Farrah and Catelynn in 2009 on the hit show “16 and Pregnant.” The four girls were among the first of 47 pregnant teenagers on “16,” which ran for five seasons. The show followed each girl, beginning in her pregnancy, then through the baby’s birth and early infancy. And viewers have been able to stay with their lives on the spinoffs “Teen Mom,” “Teen Mom 2” and “Teen Mom 3.”i
Some people worried that these shows would normalize teenage pregnancy. Instead, the shows reveal how grueling it truly is — the sleep deprivation, the losing struggle to complete high school, constant unromantic bickering with a boy who’s a kid and a father, the pull from friends who can still party with impunity.
