Mental health is essential to a child’s healthy development from birth to adolescence

National Children’s Mental Health Awareness (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMSHA, 2016) seeks to publicize the importance of children’s mental health being essential to a child’s healthy development from birth to adolescence.

This would begin with childcare for infants that supports healthy emotional and cognitive development by keeping infant/caretaker ratio at a low level to ensure prompt and sensitive attention to a baby’s overall needs.

However, careful attention may include the collaborative effort of parent(s) and school(s), starting with preschool and kindergarten, where formal education often begins with academic goals to prepare the child for the next grade.
