Medicaid Matters For Kids Mondays -- Jamie S.

Every Monday for the rest of the year, Speak Now for Kids is celebrating Medicaid Matters for Kids Mondays with posts highlighting the importance of Medicaid in children’s access to health care. This week we revisit Jamie Schanbaum, who represented Texas Children’s Hospital at the 2013 Speak Now for Kids' Family Advocacy Day

Jamie Schanbaum’s life changed dramatically when she contracted meningococcal meningitis in 2008, a rare but serious infection that causes the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord to become inflamed. Her blood became septic and began attacking her body. Her doctors moved quickly and were able to save her thumbs but had to amputate her legs just below the knee. Jamie spent a total of seven months in the hospital recovering from the infection.

Today Jamie is unstoppable. In addition to learning to walk and run again, she also relearned to bike and has competed with the U.S. Paralympics bicycling team. Jamie graduated from University of Texas at Austin in 2014 were she studied sociology. As a determined and strong young woman, she has been a strong advocate for the meningococcal vaccine and Medicaid.

A patient of Texas Children’s Hospital, Jamie says that Medicaid helps with her prosthetics, which can be a hefty investment.
“My prosthetics are vital to my daily use, so not having Medicaid would greatly impact my life,” said Schanbaum. “It’s really hard for me to imagine what my quality of life would be like without Medicaid.”

Samantha_and_Lucy.jpgIn addition to being instrumental in getting the Jamie Schanbaum Act passed —a law requiring all new and transfer students in Texas living in university housing, fraternities and sororities to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis, Jamie recently partnered with Lucy Hale, star of the series “Pretty Little Liars”, on meningococcal vaccine awareness.
