Family Advocacy Day Hero -- Samantha D.
Samantha D., Age 6
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Hospital: Rush Children’s Hospital, Chicago, IL
Born at 25 weeks, and 5 days, and weighing only 2 pounds, 2 ounces, Samantha was on a ventilator for the first six weeks of her life. Due to her prematurity, Samantha underwent two surgeries and also suffered from bleeding in the brain ventricles which resolved during the 14 weeks she lived at Rush University Medical Center.
At 4 months old, weighing over 7 pounds, Samantha was able to go home. Though she had several medications prescribed and many follow up appointments with doctors and therapists over the next three years, Samantha has never needed another hospital stay. Thanks to the life-saving care she received during her first months, now Samantha only goes to the doctor for her annual visit and the occasional illness. A very happy, funny and active kindergartner, Samantha is very creative and is constantly drawing and making crafts.
Fact: Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education program helps fund training for more than 6,000 resident pediatricians every year.
