Family Advocacy Day Hero -- Meet Madelyne W.

Madelyne W., Age 9 MadelyneW.jpg
Hometown: Kent, OH
Hospital: Akron Children’s Hospital, Akron OH

Born prematurely at only 26 weeks gestation, Madelyne spent three months in the neonatal intensive care unit at Akron Children’s Hospital. Having been hospitalized more than twenty times, Madelyn continues as a patient there, receiving treatment for her cerebral palsy, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea and chronic pulmonary issues.

Although the pain and spasticity from her cerebral palsy makes many tasks difficult, Madelyne will still try to figure out a way to complete them herself. Her determination and perseverance have made a huge impression on those who care for her. In 2013, she was the inspiration for two teams competing in the Cleveland Triathlon. With the help of her therapist and her braces, Madelyne was able to cross the finish line. Always happy and smiling, she will fight this battle the rest of her life but will continue the fight with beauty and grace.

Fact: The two million sickest children on Medicaid account for only six percent of enrollees but 40 percent of costs.
