Family Advocacy Day Hero -- Meet Cole S.
Cole S., age 16
Hometown: Louisville, KY
Hospital: Kosair Children’s Hospital, Louisville, KY
Sixteen-year-old Cole was born with a severe-to-profound hearing loss, but has been mainstreamed into a regular classroom since kindergarten. He is currently a sophomore at St. Xavier High School and is a straight “A” honor student.
When Cole was 13, he was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma and went to Kosair Children’s Hospital for treatment. The first eight months of his chemotherapy protocol made his immune system so vulnerable that he was home schooled for 8th grade. After two and a half years, and 122 chemo treatments, Cole is currently in remission.
Prior to having cancer, Cole loved playing sports and helped bring back-to-back city championships to his grade school soccer team. He is also an avid video gamer.
Cole is presently a member of Kosair Children’s Hospital’s youth advisory board, and he volunteers at Gilda’s Club, a non-profit support group for those whose lives have been changed by cancer. Cole has encountered many challenges in his 16 years, but always has a smile and an upbeat attitude.
Fact: Approximately two-thirds of all children with medical complexity are covered by Medicaid.
