2015 Family Advocacy Day Hero -- Sophia

Gaither.Sophie.jpgSophia is an active, sweet, fun loving 4-year-old who had a very difficult start in life. Prior to birth, she and her twin sister, Samantha, developed twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) which required in-utero surgery for their survival. They were then born premature at 33 weeks gestation. Due to prematurity and growth issues related to TTTS, Sophia was in the NICU for just over five weeks. She developed feeding problems which extended her stay and ultimately led to her need for close follow-up with various specialty clinics.

Sophia has continued to grow and develop over the past four years. She no longer has any feeding issues and—through her determination and feisty spirit—she quickly overcame her developmental delays.

Today, you would never know by looking at her all that Sophia has overcome. Like her sister, she is a fun-loving little girl who loves to build with Legos, play with trains, work with tools, shop for shoes, color, paint, swim, run, ride her scooter, play with her cat and dog. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with her sister and big brother.
