2015 Family Advocacy Day Hero -- Nicole
Nicole, at 6 years old, was having a hard time dealing with her parents’ divorce and moving to a new home when Hurricane Sandy hit her hometown in New Jersey. The storm destroyed what her family worked so hard to establish and she began having trouble sleeping and showing signs of anxiety. Nicole’s mother made an appointment to have her evaluated.
Nicole was already familiar with the staff at Children’s Specialized Hospital since her brother and sister were receiving therapy services three times a week. The hospital staff always made Nicole feel a part of her siblings’ therapy sessions and gave her extra attention. Nicole was diagnosed with anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. With art therapy to help her express her emotions and aided by medication, 11-year old Nicole is energetic, sociable, loves to play soccer and is in dancing school.
