2015 Family Advocacy Day Hero -- Kai
Kai is a vibrant 16-year old who loves writing, drawing, listening to music and painting nails. Though today, you'll only notice her speech delay, as a little girl she overcame many scary battles. Kai was rushed to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital immediately after birth to be treated for holes in her heart that were identified during her mother's pregnancy. At 6 months old, she had open heart surgery to correct her heart defect. Thankfully, she has not had any heart troubles since.
At 15 months, Kai underwent surgery to correct the cleft palate with which she was also born. She has worked throughout her life to overcome a speech delay caused by the cleft palate. As a child, Kai was diagnosed with both attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant order, behavioral disorders for which she sees multiple practitioners while attending the Positive Education Program School.
Today, Kai is a bubbly teenager who has overcome much. She continues in speech therapy, but otherwise is living a happy, healthy life with her mom and sister, Amari.
